Lois's pond is underway again. Here it is as it has been for about 6 months. The pond was full within a week of digging. Some surface water but mostly from the super saturated compacted soils unable to drain because of the hard pan (glacial residue) underneath.
First we had to bail the pond out. This was a great test to determine how the wetland and overflow path/stream functioned. We emptied the pond, about 1200 gallons in 5 minutes, and it worked perfect. The wetland did overflow to the stream/path as expected but all the water was contained on site with plenty of reserve remaining.
Here it looks like we've gone backwards. A nice little pond and tidy site to a war zone. All this work happened in less than a day.
An existing rock on Lois's property is being moved as a splash block for under the chain downspout nearest the pond. Our grades are very tricky here and to capture the water into the pond we needed to pick up some elevation. The mossy granite looks great next to the rusty chain, sleek black aluminum window and cedar shingles.
The simple pond, when done, will look like it's always been there. To achieve this takes much more site work than one would expect. To hide the liner and provide a safe pond with egress, shelves have to be created to hold rocks and soils so plants can grow around the edge.
Lois proudly watches over the destruction of her yard!
